Pedal Projects Klone Overdrive/Boost You know about the infamous Klon Drive, right? If you don’t, do some research. It has somehow become the end-all, be-all of drive pedals, and while it only cost about $225 in the ’90’s, today they are rare, and sell for upwards of $2000. Besides being outrageously overpriced, there are now a number of pedal makers who have been able to clone the circuitry and sounds of the Klon, most at about 1/6 of the price of an original.

Which brings us to today’s pedal, the Klone from Pedal Projects. Coming to us straight out of Iceland, Pedal Projects has been growing and gaining lots of notoriety, in big part due to their Klone pedal, which seeks to replicate the original Klon. Their newest version features the same controls as the Klon: Gain, Output and Tone/Treble. So many wonderful sounds come out of this little box, and the possibilities are numerous depending which way the knobs are cranked. With the Gain around 9:00 and the Output and Treble around noon, the Klone produces a thick, warm boost that fattens up your tone, with a slight hint of drive being present. Roll back the Treble and boost the Gain a bit, and you’ve got a tamer Big Muff fuzzy sound on your hands, but the signal still remains beefy and not piercing. Whip that Gain knob up to 3:00 or more, and an incredible overdrive sound coming pouring out of your amp, lush and rich as you’d expect, and as easy on the ears as an overdrive can be.

If you’re looking for a super-fuzz distortion box, look elsewhere. This Klone provides an amazing boost, a great mid-range fuzzy tone and a downright gorgeous overdrive. Special thanks go out to Ásgeir from Pedal Projects for donating a pedal for testing. Great communication from halfway across the pond, and a genuine fella to boot. Make sure to check out their site, and order one of these (or any of their fantastic pedals) for yourself – you truly will not be disappointed! Real Klon, you can keep yourself – I’ll be keeping this Klone (and over $1000).

  1. As accurate review as they can come – true on all accounts. The Klone is the best Centaur replica I’ve ever heard (thanks to Curtis Kent’s great review video, I can’t even tell the difference) and played – I just got mine in a few days ago and I’m speechless at it’s clarity and punch – it took its rightful place as the central overdrive on my board. As stated, Asgeir is an incredibly nice fellow that has answered every lest question I’ve barraged him with (and there were many) about his pedals and his company. Not only are the products of a pristine quality, but the customer service is beyond so, and I hope Pedal Projects finds its rightful place among the greatest pedal companies the industry has to offer! 🙂
