J.Rockett Audio Designs Alien Echo DelayNow here is a great looking and sounding echo/delay from J. Rockett Audio Designs: the Alien Echo. Designed to emulate vintage delays and tape echoes, the Alien Echo also adds in on-the-fly modulation to keep you on your toes and constantly guessing about what’s coming next. The narrow but surprisingly thick brushed chrome enclosure looks gorgeous, and features a number of knobs and switches allowing you to create some lush and organic delay soundscapes.

The old-school delay sounds are spot-on, but a lot of pedals these days are trying to emulate that style. Where the Alien Echo really shines is in the Modulation portion of the pedal. Mixing up the Time, Warble and Repeats knobs produces an eternity of different aural pleasures, and since the modulation is random and chaotic, there’s a good chance you’re not going to hear the same sounds repeated too often. That’s the best part of this pedal, I think, the way you can both control the sound emanating from it, and with a few knob turns it can take off on an adventure all by itself. The lower modulated settings are a bit more playable, while the high settings are great for long intro/outro section of your show, or some awesome studio applications.

This pedal is not on the cheap end of the spectrum, which may turn some folks off. But if you want to invest the money, you’ll have a great delay with killer tones, and a lot of tasty, modulated surprises as well. J. Rockett Audio Designs has a reputation for making some of the highest-quality stuff out there, and the Alien Echo is no exception. I really had fun with this one, and you will, too!
