When I went to Guitar Center and asked “What are some good delay pedals?” I was handed a few, and the one that stood out among the rest was the Flashback x4 from TC Electronic. This delay pedal has 12 different delay types, plus, TC Electronic TonePrint® slots. TonePrint® absolutely blew my mind, it is when you take your smart phone and you download a free app and you can find different artists and their custom settings for your exact pedal. This feature is also available on TC Electronic’s Hall of Fame Reverb, Shaker Vibrato, Vortex Flanger, Corona Chorus and John Petrucci’s signature pedal: The Dreamscape.

The Flashback x4 can also work as a looper, though I wouldn’t get this pedal just for that reason, due to the length of your recording cannot extend past a certain time. It’s good for just to have a nice backing track, but not for something to rely on to just be a looper.

On the Flashback x4, for every different type of delay, there are 3 settings for each delay, they are labeled A, B and C; very simple. Each of these settings give you a different mode of whatever type of delay you have activated. There are three different settings of how you want your delay, time wise: Quarter Note, Eighth Note, Quarter Note + Eighth Note. This setting is controlled by a small switch in between the delay time knob and the feedback knob. There are 5 knobs on this pedal, in order from left to right they go: Type of Delay – Delay Time – Feedback – Delay Level – Looper Level. This Delay pedal also has a tap tempo. Very useful for live performances.

The Flashback x4’s delay time, feedback and delay level is extremely impressive. With delay time you can get a slap back sound that is barely even noticeable, to a delay so far away that it’s almost awkward. The feedback that can extend a delay for an extremely long amount of time and is not hard to control. The delay level from mute to at the same level, if not, louder than the original dry signal.

This pedal also has true bypass. Always a nice thing. So when you’re hunting for a delay pedal that has wide extents and range for almost any genre of music. Definitely keep this delay pedal in mind.
