boss tr-2 tremolo (jhs two-speed mod)There are a lot of tremolo pedals floating around these days, and honestly, each of the ones I’ve played have sounded great, in one way or another. So, I suppose (like most pedals) it comes down to personal preference, and what fits with your other gear, as well as your style of playing. I gotta admit, I’m a bit of a sucker for pedal mods – I think they’re fun and exciting ways to make a so-so pedal into something brilliant. That said, I thought I’d give the JHS Two-Speed modded Boss TR-2 Tremolo a spin…

The stock version of the TR-2 has one MAJOR flaw: Volume Drop. This seems to be the most disliked aspect of an other wise good stock pedal, but one that has tainted its reputation a good bit. The JHS mod fixes that by installing an external volume knob right onto the pedal, allowing you to adjust the boost as you see fit. A pretty easy and ingenious fix, if you ask me. The best part, though, is that they turn your ordinary pedal into a 2-speed vibrato machine, with the simple addition of a 2nd footswitch button. This 2nd footswitch is another speed setting, controllable by yet another external knob, which lets you switch back and forth between 2 separate tremolo speeds with ease. There’s even 2 different LEDs housed in one, and they change color depending on which mode you are in, while also pulsing according to the speed you’ve set.

The Boss enclosure is an industry standard for build quality and reliability, so there’s no worries about being too delicate with this stompbox. JHS has taken another average factory pedal and, with a few modifications, transformed it into a beast. The actual tremolo sounds are superb, too, for the record. Great old school vibrato sounds from your favorite old Blackface amps come shining through, adding a whole new wave of texture to your tone, and making for some fun experimentation along the way.
