greer amps tone smuggler overdriveThe first pedal I heard from Greer Amps was the Burning Goat Overdrive; after that, I knew I had to hear more. Which brings us to this little black beauty: the Tone Smuggler. A jack-of-all-trades overdrive pedal, this guy will excite, perplex and complicate you and your guitar tone, and you wouldn’t want it any other way.

Simple, 3-knob control design is great: sometimes, the less to think about, the better. Unfortunately, you’re gonna still have to use your brains on this guy, as there are a plethora of tonal options to be found within this small, well-built, tank-like enclosure. When I first turned it on, it felt like a nice, cleanish boost pedal, with the Gain setting around 9:00, and the Tone at about noon. A great little pick-me-up for my amp, it made the tones jump up a few notches and really sparkle, as a good boost should, and you can really push your amp just by cranking up the Volume knob, with the other controls backed off a bit. Once I started messing with the rest of the range in that Gain knob, though, it was ON. Clean boost to mild overdrive, to chunky, tube-y overdrive to almost a fuzz pedal, this box has got a big assortment of options to play with, and none that will leave you puzzled, dumbfounded or perplexed. You’ll just be more of a badass, is all, and so will your guitar and amp.

You’ll be playing with some fine company if you pick up a Tone Smuggler and rock it with your rig (see the list below). Nick and the fine folks at Greer Amps are sending some more great pedals our way for review here in a short minute, so they’ll be much more on tap for you guys to check out in the coming months. While you’re waiting, go see their site, and what they have to offer, ’cause they are making some fantastic effects pedals (oh yeah, and their amplifiers aren’t too shabby, either!).
