Moody Sounds Mewtone Envelope Filter

The Mu-Tron III is considered by many to be the end-all, be-all of envelope filters, and for pretty good reason. It’s classic sounds can be heard on funk records the world over, and although there have be many attempts to copy that sound, not all have been successful. Today’s pedal, the Moody Sounds Mewtone, is one that bucks that trend, however, and manages to stay true to the original sound while adding in some modern amenities as well.

The controls on the Mewtone line up pretty much with the controls on the Mu-Tron, but sport an additional Gain control that was not present on the original. The Mode knob selects between Hi-Pass, Low-Pass and Band-Pass filters, for a vast array of sonic sounds to choose from. The Range switch selects between Low and High frequencies which affect the overall Tone of the filter, and Drive determines which direction the wah-wah moves, Up or Down.

Adjust acts like a depth or sensitivity control, letting you adjust the filter to fit the instrument or setup that you are currently using perfectly. The Peak knob controls the sharpness of the filter, from subtle and slight to a more biting, less nasal tone. Gain is a new control, not found on the original Mu-Trons, and it adds some beef and punch to the overall output sound. This lets the Mewtone really stand out in a crowd, or in a band with lots of other instruments to compete with.

As you’ll hear in the video below, this thing is a pure funk machine, with a ton of options allowing for a gigantic spectrum of sounds to choose from and create with. I’ve gotta thank Albin and the crew at Moody Sounds for shipping this great filter to us all the way from Sweden – if you get a chance, check out their website. Their pedals are also available as DIY kits, so you can experiment at home and see if you can build a pedal yourself! They host a smorgasbord of pedals, kits and other fun stuff, so show ’em your support!
