greer amps sucker punch distortionI review a LOT of overdrive pedals. A LOT. While the majority of them sound awesome, once in a while I will plug one in and it blows me away right from the get-go, one that I immediately say to myself, “You have to find room for this on one of your pedalboards NOW.” One of these pedals is the Sucker Punch Distortion from Greer Amps, so let’s check it out!

As soon as you unleash this thing onto your favorite amp of choice (tube-preferred, IMO), you will see what I’m talking about as far as tone and balls-out rock and roll are concerned. I felt like I was in the studio watching Slash and the boys record ‘Appetite For Destruction‘, except the tones from that great record were coming out of the amp in my practice space!

Control-wise, there’s nothing revolutionary about the Sucker Punch. Volume, Gain and Tone are about as basic as it gets for a dirt pedal, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this is a one-trick pony, even thought it is a workhorse (hehe). The SP uses a JFET preamp to drive a 386D chip amp section, creating tones similar to early JCM amplifiers, some of the most coveted of the Marshall line. This stompbox is like having a Marshall in a box, with a huge amount of volume, great open and soaring amp-like tones and the crunch and meat of amp sounds heard on countless album recordings throughout the last 50 years.

With a ton of range, great sounds and a really flamboyant yellow enclosure, the Sucker Punch is the complete package, without overdoing it or trying to cram too many unnecessary options into a perfect drive box. It’s not really a big surprise, as Nick and everyone at Greer Amps keep churning out great pedal after great pedal. This one really rocked my world, however, so cheers to you all in Georgia, and keep making this excellent gear for us all to enjoy!
