TWA Fly Boys FB-02 Overdrive

Welcome to our second installment here during “Fly Boys Week”! Today’s pedal from Totally Wycked Audio is the FB-02 Overdrive, and boasts hints of a classic overdrive pedal, the TS-808 from Ibanez. Featuring two unique gain stage settings and a heaping of gain on tap, this little pedal speaks big volumes.

Tone, Level and Gain knobs make up the first part of the pedal’s controls, much like the FB-01 Distortion from yesterday, but features an entirely different inner circuit and tonal quality than that pedal does. There’s a nice range of gain again, however, and is capable of doing a vast array of overdriven levels of sound. The FB-02’s most impressive control is the small toggle switch located in the top middle of the pedal, which allows the selection of its two different drive modes.

The Warm setting should ideally be paired with single-coil pickups, as it is geared toward a warm and tube amp-like tone. This setting is where you really get that 808 overdriven sound in abundance. The Hot setting adds in an extra boost of both volume and gain, much like a Fender Twin when pushed to the limit. This setting will add in a ton of creamy sustain and smooth drive sounds, with the big Gain knob again being easily adjustable on the fly for more tonal variety.

The entire line of Fly Boys pedals are encased in sturdy but lightweight aluminum enclosure, making sure they can withstand any punishment thrown at them. Plus, with their small size, traveling to gigs and saving pedalboard space are certainly guaranteed. Thanks to Kevin and Godlyke for sending us this lineup of pedals for this exciting and Totally Wycked review week here – come back tomorrow and see what the next pedal is going to be!
