jhs pedals the kilt overdrive boostMost pedal builders boast about a versatile drive, but JHS’ Kilt is truly worthy of the versatile praise. The Kilt’s toggle and knob controls allow for the player to dial in clean to full out gated fuzz and anything in between. And while most pedals that claim to be versatile have maybe one or two “sweet spots,” the Kilt is special all the way through. Based off of the old Expandora fuzz, the Kilt takes a classic and unique tone, adds more functionality, and represents a more modern version of such a sweet pedal. The gain has character and cool vibe. Really nails rock tones. It shreds with both single coils and humbuckers. Comes through a live mix very well. It even has an independent boost circuit. Whats not to love?!

Now, the Kilt does not feed the “transparent market,” but what it does do, it does so very well. The Kilt’s breakup is so unique. Simply, the gain is very much fuzz-like, but you can tame every aspect of this pedal and clean it up entirely (if so desired). It can easily become a cool, vibey pre-amp. However, why would you cut it’s potential off there? This thing sounds absolutely amazing while cranked. Just listen to Stu G wail on it – Amazing.

The controls are simple, but are there many of them, so remember to tweak everything. The boost knob controls the volume level for the boost pedal, so it doesn’t directly affect the main circuit. From left to right of the toggles you have: 1. Low cut (lowers bass). 2. G1 (overdrive clipping). 3. G2 (Distortion clipping.) 4. Order toggle (boostunleash its powers… Seriously, a great pedal. JHS Pedals did a good thing. Good thing, indeed.
