After recently reviewing a couple of new pedals from Backwoods Music, I came across an older version of one of their pedals for a price I couldn’t pass up, and was excited to see what it could do, after being thoroughly impressed by the Nightcap Reverb and Mockingbird Delay. I’m not a huge Boost guy in general, but I thought “what the hell”, and went for it anyway! Not knowing what to expect, I sat down and plugged it in, and instantly knew I had found a special little pedal in the Dirt Burglar.
Right away, the soft switch impressed me – for as inexpensive as this pedal was, the clickless bypass feature had me on board immediately! As soon as you turn the Dirt Burglar on, there’s one thing that instantly stands out: VOLUME. I’m not sure what the exact dB boost range is here, but you are absolutely NOT going to be at a loss for power with this puppy, let me tell you. Besides the Volume control, there are separate Treble and Bass control knobs, and I’m a huge fan of splitting the EQ like that, especially in a preamp pedal like this. Both have a nice amount of frequency range to choose from, allowing you to really dial in just what your guitar and amp need to sound even more incredible than they already do.
The Dirt Burglar is a pretty no-nonsense pedal – you know what it is and what it does basically before you plug it in. Once you do, you find the settings that you love, and you’re done. No fuss, no muss, just a great boost pedal that will push your tube amp into glorious overdrive with ease.
