Bookworm Effects Billy Pilgrim Overdrive

A one-knob overdrive pedal? That’s what we first said when the box we received from Bookworm Effects was opened. Granted, there were a couple of toggle switches as well, but what about the Tone knob? Or Gain? Or Volume, even? After playing around a bit with the Billy Pilgrim Overdrive, however, it was clear that this was no one trick pony, and that a surprising amount of differing tones were capable through this little Kurt Vonnegut-inspired masterpiece.

The lone control knob on the Billy Pilgrim is just adjusts the level of the pedal’s output, but it interacts with the 2 toggle switches to give this drive its real identity. The first toggle is the Bomb, which is a clipping selector that goes back and forth between Vintage (more balanced/compressed) and Modern (boost in mids and volume) tone modes. The Necklace switch is a Gain Cut, which, when activated both bumps up the overall level of the pedal (about 3dB), but also gives the mids a boost as well, making it a cinch to slice and dice your way through any mix with no problem.

With classic novel-inspired graphic design by Brian Pickens of MadeinWV.com, the Billy Pilgrim Overdrive not only looks rad, and has a little history built into it, but it sounds great and features some fantastic tonal options in an easy-to-use enclosure. True bypass, 9v powered and handmade in Morgantown, WV, this ode to “Slaughterhouse-Five” is a rad addition to any pedalboard. Thanks so much to Brian from Bookworm Effects for letting us check it out – looking forward to reviewing some more of their pedal in the near future! Cheers!
