gfi system specular 2 reverbA little while ago, Pedal of the Day got our hands on our first pedal from GFI System, the Clockwork Delay. Although there is now a newer version, we were quite impressed with the amount of options that GFI had managed to squeeze into such a pedalboard-friendly enclosure, not to mention the impressive array of tones and sounds that it was able to produce. So we were pretty excited when a package arrived on the doorstep from the company themselves, and once we opened it up, were stoked to see the Specular2 Reverb staring us right in the face.

This is a reverb pedal, sure, but one really unlike anything you might have witnessed before. There is one lone “normal” reverb mode, which sounds great in and of itself, plus SIX “atmospheric” modes (Modulated, Shimmer, Echo, Tremble, Voices, and Infinity), all of which are fairly easily accessible for on-the-fly switching and tone shaping. You can also save up to 8 reverb presets, which makes on-stage mixing and matching a cinch.

Blend, Decay, Damping and Intensity make up the four tiny control knobs on the face of the Specular2, while Stereo Ins and Outs reside on the backside (this pedal sounds incredible in stereo, check the video below for a sample!). Another cool feature is the Auto Intensity Sweep – when engaged, the parameter controlled by the Intensity knob is slowly swept to the maximum value, held there, and then swept back to the original setting, making for some super-creative and unique sounds you can produce with ease.

Small, simple (or so it appears) yet bold and powerful, the Specular2 is a reverb that you will love to get confused by. Once you figure it all out, though, it’s gonna be pretty hard to ever get it off your board. We can’t thank GFI System enough for letting us check out this incredible piece of gear, and are looking forward to reviewing more of their pedals in the near future. While you wait for that, make sure to check out their website for more incredible effects and pedals!
