Sometimes, your guitar tone just needs a bit of….something. Most times, it’s hard to figure out what that special addition to your rig might be, but sometimes it just reveals itself with the push of a bypass switch. The Blue Hippo MkII Analog Chorus from Way Huge Electronics is exactly one of these additions, a pedal that gives your tone a sparkle and gives you playing a much-appreciated kick in the pants.

Not much to the Blue Hippo as far as controls go, but the ones that are present have big range, full, rich sounds and impressive analog tone that really compliments any guitar/amp combo. Speed obviously controls how slow or fast the chorused effect moves, while Depth lets you decide how intense you want the effect to be, sort of like a pseudo-blend control. There’s also a Vibe toggle switch, which completely removes the dry signal from the path, and kicks the Blue Hippo into high gear, from a normal-sounding chorus up to a fat, Leslie-esque vibrato party.

The chorus effect has been around for a long, long time, but it still has relevance in today’s musical world, as is excellently evidenced by the Blue Hippo. A perfect way to inject some life into a dull pedalboard, or to dial in the classic tones of your guitar heroes from decades past, this pedal is right at home in any rig or setup. Again, Way Huge Electronics has decided to only make a limited run of these pedals, so finding one might be a bit of a trick. If you do, though, you’ll be glad you picked it up, and your audiences will thank you as well.
