Known for creating some interesting and unique pedals geared more towards the heavy side of music, Pro Tone Pedals keeps on putting out some great gear, and today’s featured pedal is one of their signature effects. The Dead Horse Overdrive is Pro Tone’s take on a classic circuit from a certain famous green box, only with more improvements and better sound. In their words, “It’s based on a Tube Screamer…but it sounds WAY better!”

If the control section on the Dead Horse Overdrive seems familiar, that’s because it should be. The Volume controls gives off a TON of output, to make sure everyone in the club hears this sick pedal. Tone boasts a great range with an extended bass frequency, from chunky, beefy low-end to crisp and sparkling highs, with a multitude of other options between those two extremes. Finally, everyone’s favorite overdrive control, the Gain, is like any old gain control…except with MORE.

Utilizing the legendary JRC4558 IC chip, the Dead Horse has a bunch more drive on tap than a traditional TS-type pedal, making it a true powerhouse that delivers on all its promises. Plus, there’s an additional feature that helps to set it apart from other overdrives in this particular style. A tasty diode selection toggle switch lets you switch between symmetrical and asymmetrical, for even more sonic options. Mix this option in with the Gain and Tone controls, and you’ve got days of experimentation waiting ahead of you.

Having created a nice lineup of overdrive pedals, and now even venturing into modulation territory with their delay and chorus effects, Pro Tone Pedals continues to push the sonic boundaries for the metal and hard rock genres, but with enough flexibility that their pedals can be used in other musical places as well. Scary graphics, tough-as-nails enclosures and hard core stomp switches are just a few of the reasons you know these effects will last a lifetime, and then some. For more killer tones and sonic options, be sure to check out their website to see their current pedal selection.
