boss rv-5 digital reverbThe RV-3 Reverb/Delay from Boss is one of my all-time favorite effects pedals, combining two wonderful effects together with a bunch of combination options and pretty rad-sounding tones. I’d always been a little skeptical of the RV-5 Digital Reverb, as it slimed down to being just a reverb, and as much as I dig delay, I thought it was a choice I was not going to like. Turns out, the RV-5 is a fine piece of gear, and apparently there’s a reason why it shows up on so many pedalboards worldwide.

Level, Tone and Time controls bust out of the gate to give you control over the sound of the RV-5, but where this pedal really shines is in the Mode selection knob. Plate, Hall and Room modes offer some luscious echo sounds, each giving off different spatial reverb qualities and reverberations. The Modulate mode detunes the reverb sound for added spaciousness, while the Spring reverb emulation setting offers realistic spring reverb sounds. Finally, the Gate setting is taken from high-end Roland studio gear, for a crisp, pristine and professional-sounding reverb.

These 6 high-quality reverb modes are definitely on par with the expensive rackmount processors, but in a neat and tidy, pedalboard-friendly package. Plus, you have the option to run it as a stereo pedal, with 2 inputs and 2 outputs, making it a versatile piece of gear for any rig, and the stereo sounds are the stuff musical dreams are made of. As usual, this pedal from Boss is built like a tank, with a rugged enclosure, sturdy control knobs and a big, fat stomp switch that would need to get run over by a semi to break…maybe. Now discontinued, the RV-5 Digital Reverb will surely become a reverb of legend, if it isn’t already. Check out the Boss site for all their new effects, and if you come across one of these bad boys, scoop it up immediately!
