electro-harmonix cathedral stereo reverbYesterday, we reviewed a compact pedal that featured a bunch of reverb options, the Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb. Today’s pedal is also a reverb, with a bunch of options, except WAY more than the RV-5, and in a pedal about twice the size. The Cathedral Stereo Reverb from Electro-Harmonix is a beast of a reverb, with almost too many sounds and options to explain…but we’re going to do our best to try.

Let’s start with the different modes that the Cathedral features, shall we? The first two are a pair of spring reverbs: the first taken from Electro-Harmonix’ Holy Grail Reverb pedal, and the second is a new Accutronics Spring tank emulation. Hall, Room , Plate and Reverse modes feature top notch, professional reverb algorithms, while Grail Flerb mode is the Holy Grail Flerb with greater adjustability. Finally, Echo mode makes the Cathedral into a versatile two second digital delay, for even more exploration.

As far as the controls for these modes, Blend starts things off, mixing your dry signal with the Cathedral‘s reverb effect. Reverb Time adjusts the overall length of the effect, while Tone / Dampening allows for further sonic control and refinement over the pedal’s sound. Feedback controls the amount of time the reverb lingers on after you play a note or chord, while Pre-Delay allows the player to dictate to the pedal just when the effect kicks in, and is controllable via the Tap / Infinite footswitch located in the bottom left corner of this wicked rad stompbox.

You can also get instantaneous infinite reverb by pressing and holding the Tap / Infinite footswitch, for off-the-cuff modulated reverb tones at your fingertips…er, toetips, I guess. The Cathedral also features true stereo inputs and outputs, an ultra low noise and transparent signal path and studio quality 24-bit A/D and D/A converters. You can also save and load up to 8 presets, 1 preset for each different mode, for simple selection throughout your band’s setlist. With a boatload of functions and options, and a huge range of tones and sounds to discover, the Cathedral Stereo Reverb from Electro-Harmonix is a must-have for ‘verb enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to take their rig to a new dimension.
