Morningstar Engineering MC6 MIDI Foot ControllerSo, today’s pedal takes us on an absolutely new adventure here at Pedal of the Day: MIDI. Not really knowing how it works or having ever really used it much (at least not a device this intense and powerful), we were a little intimidated when the MC6 MIDI Controller showed up on our doorstep. Luckily for us, the guys at Morningstar Engineering are super-nice, and over the course of several emails, we were able to dive in and do some pretty cool stuff with this controller. Let’s check it out!

For this review, we used a Strymon TimeLine and a Boss DD-500 to run our tests and figure the MC6 out, and they both behaved wonderfully. The MC6 features 30 Banks of 6 switches, and each switch is capable of sending up to 8 different MIDI messages, allowing each individual switch to control whatever you need, sometimes performing two tasks at once. Scroll through banks and presets, control the Timeline looper’s Record, Play, Stop, Reverse and Half-Speed functions (using only 3 switches), Tap Tempo and MIDI Clock Syncs and more with this incredible (and pedalboard-friendly) machine.

Morningstar has also created an online Web Editor, too (via Google Chrome), so you can edit the switches right on your computer, in addition to being able to edit on the MC6 itself, for a ton of versatility. You can also use the 2 jacks in the back to connect expression pedals, aux switches or one of each, completely expanding the control you’ll have over every pedal running alongside the MC6.

As the Morningstar Team puts it, “We wanted to create a midi controller that could control all other MIDI devices regardless of brand or model. And we wanted it to be as flexible and easy to use as possible.” Well, we think they’ve accomplished that feat, and then some with the MC6 MIDI Controller. The video below is just a glimpse into what this wonderful box is capable of, but each of us will use it differently, so you need to just grab one and figure it out for yourself. Thanks so much to James and the crew at Morningstar Engineering for sending the MC6 our way to attempt to figure out – hope we did a decent job, and we can’t wait to see what creations you unleash in the coming years!
