Boss DS-1 Distortion ( JHS Synth Drive Mod)Today’s guest review comes to us from Max F. – find him on SoundCloud (@MaxFaith)!

The Boss DS-1 is a classic circuit that most of us are familiar with. Players have been modifying the little orange boxes for years and the amount of modifications and spinoffs are too numerous to mention. Despite the variety of DS-1 circuit configurations, most specimens seem to impart the same familiar gain-structure that originally made the pedal a classic. Today’s pedal is a welcome departure from traditional DS-1 Modifications.

The DS-1 Synth Drive is made by the great people at JHS Pedals in Kansas City, Missouri. JHS offers new complete DS-1 Synth Drive units as well as the opportunity for customers to mail-in their own DS-1s to be modified into Synth Drive units.

Mutations to the original circuit include three unlabeled synth switches as well as the additions of a secondary LED and stylish white knobs. The Synth Drive DS-1 is fully capable of reproducing classic distortion sounds when the synth switches are off. Combining various synth switch combinations with the 12-6 position ranges of the controls will reveal many interesting synth waveforms to include octaves, ring modulation, droning, and lo-fi pitch squeals.

In summary, the JHS DS-1 Synth Drive is a complete reimagining of the original circuit and is suitable for use as a quality distortion unit or powerful noise generator. The unit is interesting and versatile and reasonably priced. Go check one out!
