Wren and Cuff Hangman-2D DistortionYears and years ago, I bought a fuzz from a new company called Wren and Cuff: it was green, with a single silver stripe down the front, and is to this day one of the favorite fuzz pedals I’ve ever owned. Sadly, I had to sell it many moons ago to help pay rent, and have regretted it ever since. Fortunately, I’m now in a position to have befriended the owner of said pedal company, and he decided it would be a good idea to send us some pedals to review…and we couldn’t agree more.

Today’s featured pedal from Wren and Cuff is the Hangman-2D Distortion, a beast of a pedal that pays homage to another treasured (well, to some, anyway) piece of gear from the past, like my old trusty fuzz. The Boss HM-2 hasn’t been made since the early ’90’s, but the Hangman vows to make right what once was thought to be wrong in the topsy-turvy world of pedals…

Like the HM-2, this pedal can go from super compressed, tight, smooth distortion, to a snarling buzz-saw monster that brings out every pick-to-string strike you throw at it. While containing Volume and Distortion controls, for obvious purposes, the Hangman also boast an odd-ish EQ section, made up of controls labeled Lows and Highs. Not exactly what you’d expect, the Highs knob is actually more of a hybrid high-end-and-mids conundrum, making it effectively dial in the upper echelon of the mid-section, while the Lows portion does exactly what ti should, and plays nice with the Highs control, too.

The Hangman-2D Distortion pedal can absolutely be used for the heaviest, deathiest, dirtiest metal tones you’ve ever heard…but, if you dig something a bit smoother, with more presence and dynamic character, then you can find that here as well. Looking for a clean boost sound? Just leave right now, it ain’t gonna happen. Want a heavier-but-still-tolarable tone? You’ve come to the right place. Thanks to Matt from Wren and Cuff for letting us check this guy out – the demo below will give you a slight glimpse into the power of this thing, but you should really check it out on your own to see what it can do for you.

*Stay tuned for a review of the signature pedal from Troy Sanders of Mastodon, as well as an interview with the man himself, coming soon to a Pedal of the Day website near you!!*
