Caroline Guitar Company Kilobyte Lo-Fi DelayToday’s featured pedal is one we’ve had our eye on for some time, and were super-stoked when the opportunity to review it came along (we even managed to get the Vintage King Special Edition). The Kilobyte™ is a Lo-Fi Delay pedal, one with a bunch of options, and some of the smoothest and craziest echoes you’ll find on a pedal, anywhere. Deep, dark, analog delay tones are easy to come by, as well as crystal-clear digital sounds as well, plus a whole lot more packed into this awesome retro enclosure.

If you’re confused by the fact that all the knobs on the Kilobyte™ are only identified by odd shapes and designs, you’re not alone. After doing some much-needed research, however, we were able to decipher these hieroglyphic symbols and get down to business. In the top left area, we start out with the Level control, which adjusts the overall volume of the repeats relative to your original signal, and is able to boost them a bit louder for some playful interaction. Directly below is the Sum knob, which sets the number of repeats, and is capable of going into wicked self-oscillation mode when cranked up.

Attack is the first control on the right side, upper level, and this allows you to determine the gain in the repeater preamp, again making the repeats dirtier and louder. Clock rounds out the 4 main knobs, and it sets the overall delay time, which usually maxes out between 500-600ms, depending on your particular pedal. This delay also boasts another cool feature right smack dab in the middle: a Modulation control. Small and surreal, this little black knob controls a gentle amount of pitch shifting in the repeats, and was specially designed by Mr. Jack DeVille of Mr. Black Pedals’ fame.

Finally, a Havoc footswitch lets you instantly send the Kilobyte™ into a runaway repeat mode, but one that’s a little less harsh and pronounced than if you use the Sum knob, making it perfect for adding some dissonance to certain sonic runs or passages. Overall, this is one incredible delay pedal, and the fact that it uses a low fidelity, bandwidth reduced PT2399 digital delay chip for creating the repeats makes it a special unit indeed. We’re hoping to have some more reviews of pedals from Caroline Guitar Company later this year, so check back, and don’t forget to watch our demo below…
