We have had the pleasure of reviewing and demoing a whole bunch of pedals from our friends at Celestial Effects over the years, and we get to do it again today! The Virgo Rock Overdrive conjures up feelings and sounds of all your favorite classic rock tunes and guitarists from the ’60’s and ’70’s with ease, while adding in some modern functionality and enough options to fill Madison Square Garden. Deceptively simple, this blue powerhouse of a pedal is sure to turn some heads and get the crowd rocking.
Based on a dual opamp circuit with hard clipping, the Virgo Rock produces a heavy, tight, in your face, saturated tone, and can do anything from a clean boost to tasty, sustaining overdriven distortion. Volume sets the output level, and there’s more than enough screaming out of this pedal. The Tone features a nice EQ sweep, without taking over your original tone, and adding in some tasty transparent sounds. The Virgo is very touch sensitive, and features very little noise filtering so your instrument’s entire signal comes through easily and cleanly.
The gain is produced using two paralleled TL082 opamp amplifiers. Use the Gain control to get a cleaner, fuller original tone when set low, or crank it up for some powerfully crunchy and harmonically rich drive. The Edge control will take the crunch to a new level, but rolling it back a bit produces a smoother tone, which you can use along with the Gain and Tone to set up a perfect rock and roll fantasy.
Hand-built like a tank using the best components available, including an aluminum powder coated enclosure, CTS pots and Neutrik jacks, the Virgo Rock Overdrive is not a versatile-sounding pedal, but one that can withstand the rigors of the road, and years of future shoe and boot abuse.
