VOX Double Deca DelayThere are many, many pedals you see on all the forums and discussion boards, and what everyone wants to trade their garbage for. Sometimes, though, you discover a gem that, while it may have been around for a while, isn’t necessarily on anyone’s super-radar. Today’s pedal, the Double Deca Delay from VOX, is exactly one of those. We first ran across it while watching a Rig Rundown of Chris Robinson‘s gear, and wanted to check it out – here’s what we found out about it.

The Double Deca Delay uses THREE famous 3205 BBD chips inside, making it a cinch to coax classic analog delay sounds out of this little red box. Level sets your overall volume/mix, and Feedback gives you control over the amount of repeats the delay provides. This control when turned up will send the Double Deca into serious oscillation, for loud, dirty, pulsating and mutating echoes that last forever. There’s a great Modulation control as well, which lets you add some chorus-type tones into the mix, giving you a little warble and vibrato to your sound.

The Time knob works together with the Time Mode toggle switch, which features three different modes. Short Mode gives you clean, crisp delays up to 300ms, while Long Mode gives off a warmer, analog-ier sound with wicked delay trails. Wanna get crazy? Switch this thing to Both Mode, and you get some really nice ambience going on, especially when you add in some modulation. This is the true star of this pedal, and will have you stuck in your basement or rehearsal space for days, if not weeks.

Another simple, easy to figure out pedal that looks and sounds fantastic, the Double Deca Delay can go up against any (well, most) classic analog delay effects and hold its own. And before you ask, no, that is unfortunately NOT a real tube on the front of the pedal, it’s just a piece of plastic that resembles one, but does let you peer into the circuit inside. This thing sounds great, and since it was our first leap into the world of VOX pedals, you can be sure that we will be reviewing more of them down the road.
