Ross R-60 FlangerYou gotta love a good vintage pedal, especially one that’s a little beat up, and shows its age. The R-60 Flanger from Ross we came across is exactly that, giving us a glimpse into what it has been through over the course of its 40-year life. Not surprisingly, however, it still sounds just fantastic, as these old Ross pedals were built like tanks, and able to withstand whatever was thrown at them. Let’s take a look and see what she can do…

There’s not a ton of info on these old Flanger units, but with the sounds that it produces, a manual is hardly necessary. Man(ual) sets the base notch frequency for the flanging harmonics, and Man/Auto sets the width of the LFO waves’ sweep controlling the effect. Rate controls how fast or slow those waves run, and Recycle rounds out the parameters by setting the amount of flanging depth and resonance. Sitting down with this red menace for just a little while, and you can figure out how to manipulate these knobs to dial in some impressive, space-exploration-infused flanger and phaser tones with ease.

Utilizing the now-rare Reticon SAD1024A bucket brigade chip, as well as four RC4558 chips the R-60 produces a chewy, warm flanger sound, ala Lowell George, Andy Summers, Steely Dan and more. A classic type of sound, the fullness and bold sonic flavors that come out of it will transport your rig back to the late 70’s in an instant. Not in production for a long time now, these units are becoming less and less available, so if you happen across one, don’t hesitate to snatch it right up.
