We’ve had our fair share of reverb pedals come through the shop over the years, and we love it when one arrives that really re-imagines the way that effect should sound. My friends, the Dark Aura Modulated Reverb from Haunted Labs does just that, and more. Taking your favorite bits of ambience and stuffing them through a sonic meat grinder, this pedal takes you to the edge of modulation insanity and space-time travel, for a journey you’ll not soon forget.
This original design and circuit start off with a Mix control, allowing you to slowly blend in the reverberated effect to taste. With this pedal, though, you don’t really want to go gentle with it – crank it up and let the magic begin. Up next is the Decay knob, which sets the length of the reverb fade. Using this control allows easy dialing in of anything from short, slap back type ‘verb sounds to long, drawn-out, ethereal blankets of sound that whisk you away to other worlds.
The versatility of this atmospheric machine continues with the addition of the Evolve control, one that adds in a powerful shimmer effect that sure to get your creative juices a’flowin’. Even at low settings, this is a mighty parameter to try and tame, and as you slowly turn it up, it just completely takes over your tone, in the best of ways. Using different combinations of the Evolve and Decay controls will yield some unruly and expressive soundscapes, covering your original signal in an ambient wash you may not have yet witnessed.
All in all, this reverb is a wake up call for anyone who digs some ambience, but wants to explore new and ethereal ways to use it in their musical creations. A small company just getting going, Haunted Labs is definitely on the right track with this first pedal of theirs.
