Whenever a crazy, noise-laden, free form piece of musical equipment comes into the office, we tend to get fairly excited. When the Erratic Clutch Deluxe arrived, we had no idea what we were in for, as it doesn’t really tell you what it is on the outside. However, once we plugged it in, we were treated to a sonic explosion, the likes of which we don’t witness very often around here. You’re all in for a treat today, folks, so hold on, ’cause here we go…
The Erratic Clutch Deluxe features 2 separate control circuits: a fuzzy square wave and a monophonic sub-octave square wave, both of which create differing levels of fuzz and distortion, in many unique ways. Each signal can be used individually, or together, for a plethora of combinations and varying degrees of power, with a few other added controls to spice things up.
In the center of the effect, there’s a Bias knob, which adjusts the pulse width in the initial fuzz stage of the pedal. You set this to interact specifically with whatever pickups you’re using, and to increase sustain or set more predictable note tracking. There’s a toggle in the center, too, which lets you select either the Sub-Octave or Square Wave settings, or combine them to further explore and manipulate all that this black beauty has to offer.
As you’ll hear in the demo below, this thing gets NUTS. A very original overall sounding effect, the Erratic Clutch Deluxe is chock full of character, quirk and total unpredictability. Plus, these effects come as kits, for you to assemble yourself, for a pedal that you can truly feel proud of once the build is complete.
