The DD series of delay pedals from Boss is arguably one of the most successful lines ever produced, and there’s a good chance you’ve had at least one of these digital wonders on your pedalboard at one time or another (or do currently). While they are certainly celebrated in their stock form, they also have been extremely adaptable to modifications, and that’s what we’re going to look at today. Loophole Pedals thrives on their ability to navigate the unique tones these delay produce and add useful, thoughtful and exciting mods to them, turning an already great pedal into an exquisite one. Today we’re going to check out the DD-5, and see what a few simple mods can do to really open up this marvelous effect.
Here’s what Loophole Pedals did to our lovely DD-5:
Tap Mod: This mod adds an onboard tap tempo foot-switch to give you more intuitive control over your tap tempo without needing an external remote (Feedback and Preset Mods are available in this slot as well)
Analog Mod: This mod adds a toggle switch to lower the frequencies of the pedal aka an analog delay
Reverse Mode Dry Kill Mod: This mod adds a toggle switch to kill the dry signal, leaving only the “wet” repeats. This only works in Reverse Mode and is perfect for stereo rigs. Note that there is no signal in bypass when the toggle is on
These mods, as you’ll see in our demo video below, really push the DD-5 to make it into a more useful and better-sounding digital delay. The Analog modes sound great, adding a darker element to the repeats, and the Kill Dry Mode is lots of fun to use to just drown your sound in straight effect. The Tap Mod lets you easily reach your pedal anywhere on your board, to keep the tap tempo in play without any external, additional pedals to add to your rig.
