D-Sound Effects '73 Ram's Head Distortion

The Big Muff. You’ve heard it, you know it, you love it….but, can you afford an original, 1970’s-era model? Probably not, plus there’s the maintenance, reliability, etc. that goes along with owning any piece of vintage gear. Thankfully, we’re super-spoiled in the effects pedal community, and have companies like D-Sound Effects, all the way from Russia, to help us with these bumps in the road. Today we’re looking at their take on the ’73 Ram’s Head Muff, made famous by Gilmour, Mascis and others, only this one is in housed in a MINI enclosure. What’s the difference? Space-saving, my friends, space-saving is the key…

This little clone features Level, Tone and Drive controls (Volume, Tone and Sustain on the originals), and gives you the ease of use to dial in a great sound right off the bat. Adjusting this simple parameter section is a cinch, going from a slightly overdriven sound to a thick, meaty distortion to a smooth, fuzzy break-up when really maxed out. Sustain for days is easily achievable with the ’73 Ram’s Head Mini, and the high-quality, hand-built craftsmanship really comes shining through, in all aspects of this effect.

If you have a spare $400-$900 laying around, have an intimate knowledge of effect circuits and have the patience to do repairs and upgrades, perhaps an original EHX Big Muff is exactly right for you. However, for the rest of us, we need a reliable, inexpensive distortion fuzz that’s going to make us sound like our heroes at a reasonable cost. The ’73 Ram’s Head Mini does just that, all while boasting a rad, bright purple color scheme and heavy tones for years to come. Nice job once again, D-Sound Effects – we have recently had their Fisherman and Orion pedals come through the shop, too, so be sure to check out our reviews and demos for those guys. And, as always, check out our review of this pedal below, and don’t be shy about subscribing to our YouTube channel! Cheers!
