When the crew at Gamechanger Audio released the Plasma Pedal a couple years back, we were blown away, and it’s still one of our favorite distortion pedals ever. So when we heard they were teaming up with Third Man Records for a special version, called the Plasma Coil Distortion, we were intrigued, to say the least. Come to find out that this new version has been made to Jack White‘s specs, and we were 100% in.
The Plasma Coil utilizes the same technology as the original Plasma Pedal, transforming your instrument’s live signal into a series of continuous high-voltage discharges within a Xenon-filled tube. The overdrive/distortion produced is quick, responsive and extremely heavy, with a ton of unique character. The Plasma Coil builds on this, creating unusual harmonic saturation, noise-gating properties and an extremely wide EQ. Another key difference here is the Effect Knob, which gives you SIX distinct effect mode to alter your sound.
Along with a Voltage Booster mode, there are 2 Subharmonic modes, which modulates the Xenon tube’s voltage with multiple divisions of the instrument’s fundamental frequency. There are 3 Harmonic modes as well, which use a full-wave rectifier and band-pass filter to achieve an octa-fuzz type sound, with a distinct 2nd harmonic enhancement. The Voltage control lets you adjust the amount of current sent to the Xenon tube, and the Low/High Freq knobs shape and mold your tone as well.
Basically, this thing is loud and distorted, but in an almost quiet way….sound confusing?
