Our limited experience with Toneczar Effects has got us pretty excited for today’s pedal. We previously had the chance to check out the Echoczar, one of the best delays we’ve ever had our hands on, and now we’re delving into modulation territory. The Halophze Two-Speed Stereo Phaser, is a phase shifter and vibrato in one, with two dedicated speed settings and a ton of tonal options. Here we go, let’s see what it can do!
Before we start, the Halophaze is NOT a dual pedal, meaning you can’t set one Speed as a phaser and the other as a vibrato. However, the two independent, footswitchable speed channels provide a flurry of pulsing and rotary-inspired glory, and will keep you in experimental mode for weeks )if not years). Besides the two Mix knobs and two Speed knobs, there’s a bunch of switches and other parameters available, allowing you to create the exact sound in your head.
The Dual Phase/Vibe mode switches can be set in any combination, for classic phase and vibe settings, or a unique voicing when the two are mixed. The Plus/Normal switch goes from bright and clean to a deeper, chewy sound that adds in more phasing stages. As for the knobs, Feedback produces either negative or positive feedback settings, while Width adjusts how wide the sweep range is, from low to high. Finally, the Ramp knob determines how quickly the Speed 1 and Speed 2 settings ramp up or down when you switch between them.
The Halophaze features mono or stereo connectivity, making it useful in front of an amp, in an effects loop or in mixing board applications alike. As a bonus, each Speed setting has its own differently-colored LED, even when bypassed, for instant access to the current rate. You can even plug in an external Expression pedal to control Speed 1, which makes for some excellent on-the-fly creativity as well.
