When it comes to the 3-knob Overdrive, you’ve got to make it pretty creative and fun in order to stand out from the hundreds, or thousands, of other similar effects out there. Today’s pedal does just that, with intriguing graphics, a fun outer space backstory and, of course, incredible sound. The Interstellar Audio Machines Octonaut Hyperdrive brings classic, inspired tones to the forefront, creating a perfect addition to any rig.

Using the iconic Klon Centaur as a benchmark reference, the Interstellar Audio Machines team have painstakingly realized the original pedal’s magical sound and expressive dynamic response through meticulous analysis and detailed craftsmanship. Each Octonaut Hyperdrive features germanium diodes rigorously tested for optimum tone, an IC3 that converts voltages giving the player more headroom, a gain pot which expertly blends the clipping & clean stages, a selectable true/buffered bypass operation, and a refined circuit design for ultra consistent performance from pedal to pedal. Pair this little guy with any guitar rig and the resultant tone will lead to massive planetary destruction!

The controls are simple, yes, but yield a wide range of sounds to explore and create with. VOL sets the output level, while TON acts as a tone control, increasing brightness (right) or low end (left), with a neutral tone at the 12:00 position. DRV sets the amount of input gain, ranging from clean boost at minimum to classic distortion when maxed, and loads of sonic options in between. This knob also increases the mids that are present as it is turned up, for more tonal flavoring. There’s even an internal Bypass Mode switch, which lets you select from True or Buffered bypass modes, to fit your particular needs.

Whether boosting your clean signal, driving an amp into breakup saturation or just plain livening up your overall tone, the Octonaut Hyperdrive produces so many different and useful musical sounds. Fitting seamlessly into any rig or setup, live or studio, this is one overdrive that doesn’t just go by the books, and we’re absolutely here for it. Cheers to the Interstellar Audio Machines crew on taking the oft-ordinary and making it something truly special and exciting. “Not long ago, in a galaxy relatively near to this one, The Octonaut (who has asked to remain nameless for the sake of privacy), was a simple, mid-level mechanical engineer working for the Klip League of Octonautical Navigation, until a rare disease suddenly overcame his crew.

A known cure for the disease existed but the ingredients necessary to produce it were scarce in his quadrant of the galaxy. The best known source was 13 light years away; too far to get there and back in time to save the victims.

The Octonaut went to work trying to invent a way to speed up space travel and the “Hyperdrive” was invented. This new device allowed for a team of scientists to get the needed ingredients and return in time to brew the cure and save the crew. In a happy lab accident while creating the hyperdrive, the Octonaut discovered a side effect of the machine.

While performing tests on the system, an audio signal was sent through it and it was discovered that the tone, which was unpleasant going in, sounded much more pleasing to the ears when it came out the other end of the machine. We are pleased to share the Octonaut Hyperdrive (minus a few key “speed of light travel” components) with you in this smaller format, suitable for use by the average life form.”
