The effects from Summer School Electronics just keep getting better and better, and today’s pedal from these guys combines two classic circuits into one delicious piece of gear. The Science Fair Overdrive Distortion takes elements of a classic black rodent distortion pedal and a green, mids-forward drive and brings them together in wonderful musical harmony. All the dirt you could ever need? Maybe, just maybe…
The left side of the Science Fair, with black knobs, is referred to as the Lab Rat, and is a hard-clipping, crispy distortion. The right side with the green knobs is called the Test Tube, a soft clipping, mid-range overdrive with a mid-hump boost. The 2 sides are run in parallel with individual drive and tone knobs, and the center silver knob column features master Blend and Volume controls. Turn the Blend either all the way left or right to hear each side as an individual effect. and while each circuit is excellent in its own regard, when you combine the two and blend them to taste, this experimental gem really comes alive.
The Science Fair Overdrive Distortion gives you aggressive distortion while maintaining the clarity of the notes, or a softer attack with a hint of grit to pop through the mix. Allowing you to find your signature sound, it’s a unique pedal that can provide a variety of options in recording and live applications. This is definitely a cover-all-your-bases dirt pedal, but if you want an extra push and extra sonic options, pair it with Summer School Electronics’ Trash Panda, and you’ll never need anything more.
