Couch Electronics Baker's Dozen Overdrive 1

Along with the Olinthus Cicada we recently reviewed, today’s pedal continues a wild new trend of shrinking effects pedals down several sizes. The Couch Electronics Baker’s Dozen Overdrive is a bit bigger than its predecessor, but still manages to defy expectations and crush preconceived notions with ease. With a true bypass relay circuit with optical switching and an internal power-up state switch, there’s a lot packed into a little overdriven package with this one…

The Baker’s Dozen is the result of a journey to create something that, while maintaining an unmistakable tie to its roots, boasts its own modern identity. Taking its cues from the classic Blues Breaker, this small, baby blue beauty was created with a lot of brainstorming, more than a few design iterations, and, thankfully, not too many failed prototype enclosures. The end result is a pedal measuring 70mm in width, 100mm in length (105mm including the jacks), and just a little over 40mm in height, including the knobs. Speaking of knobs, they have also been designed from scratch, crafted from a solid piece of aluminium.

This pedal is based on a classic clean op-amp boost with some modifications and added features. This pedal ranges from a clean boost to medium-gain overdrive, maintains a fairly flat EQ response, includes a tone control to tame high frequencies, and a master volume to help it scream quietly and whisper loudly. It has a true bypass relay circuit with optical switching, as well and an internal power-up state switch, which sets the pedal to be ON or OFF when the power is applied.

With it’s small size of just 2.75” x 4.13” x 1.58”, the Baker’s Dozen Overdrive will absolutely fit onto any pedalboard, and it looks simply adorable as well. The aforementioned Cicada isn’t really a pedal you can put onto a board and stomp to activate, but this baby blue beauty features some solid construction, and looks like it can take a beating if need be. Coming from the small European country of Slovenia, Couch Electronics is all about reimagined vintage designs, and the musical journey they can take us all on.
