MXR Phase 45 Vintage Script Phaser

There’s something about a really good phaser that makes your entire rig seem to just com alive. Alright, phaser-haters, just move right along to the next review. For the rest of us sane-folk, we’re here today to discuss the classic Phase 45 Vintage Script Phaser – the one from the 1970’s, mind you, not the Dunlop reissue, in case you were wondering. This true piece of phaser history only features one knob, ’cause baby, that’s all you need!

The MXR Phase 45 is liked by many, many players, and will give you instant SRV, Jimi or Robin Trower sounds. The Phase 45 was preferred by some over the other classic MXR phaser, the Phase 90, due to its more subtle sounds, which made mixing it in with a full band seamless. The phase tone itself is warm and inviting, leaving your mid-range intact. The sweep of the lone Speed knob is fairly widespread as well, going from slow and pulsing to ultra-fast, almost UniVibe-type of effect.

One knob (which is easily controlled by your foot, FYI) and that’s all she wrote. Simple, elegant, classic and smooth, it’s really hard to beat the MXR Phase 45 Vintage Script Phaser. The reissues are supposed to be faithful recreations of this version, right down to the lack of LED, but we’ll save that conversation for another day. For now, check out our demo below and, like, keep it groovy, man….
