Yellowcake Pedals Psychotropia Sample:Hold Filter

We love it when a well-designed, quirky, unconventional piece of gear arrives on our office doorstep, and today’s pedal definitely falls into all three of those categories. The Yellowcake Pedals Psychotropia Sample/Hold Filter is a bright, powerful modulation machine that falls into a million different effects genres and produces sounds that seemingly come from the vast reaches of another galaxy, far far away. With elements of tremolo, vibrato, looper, sampler, pitch shifter and more, there’s a lot to explore in this neon pink gem, so let’s jump right in!

The Psychotropia features a hearty control layout, with a bunch of knobs and switches designed to make using this pedal as fun as possible. The Rate knob controls the sample/hold’s speed, while Res(onance) controls the amount of self-oscillation of the filter side of the circuit. Glide sets the amount of Up & Down sliiiiiiiiide for the sample/hold waveform, while Level controls the overall output volume. There are CV jacks up top as well: In accepts other control voltage modules, while Out sends Rate & Glide knob functions, along with the Up, Mid, Down and Lin/Log toggles.

Speaking of toggles, there are three on the Psychotropia, each adding to the mystery and awesomeness of this pedal. On the far left, a three-way toggle lets you set what kind of waveform you’ll be creating with. In the Up position, you get a ‘rising’ edge; in the Middle position, you get both a ‘ringin’ and ‘falling’ edge, and Down gives you a strictly ‘falling’ edge. Each of these interact with and are more prominent when using the Glide knob. The middle toggle lets you choose either Logarithmic (rounds and softens the edges of the waveform) or Linear (more traditional waveform). The final toggle has Hi and Lo settings, which acts as EQ Treble and Bass cuts, depending where they’re set.

In summary, the Yellowcake Pedals Psychotropia Sample/Hold Filter falls nothing short of amazing. Ryan and the Yellowcake crew have been supporters of Pedal of the Day for the last 6 years (thank you as always), and we love it when anything new from them finds its way over to us.
