Today’s pedal both looks and sounds like my childhood, with hours and hours spent staring at and listening the glory that was Nintendo. Beeps, sweeps and creeps litter your ears when you plug in and activate the N.O.C. Pedals NinBitWah Bit Crusher Auto Wah, instantly transporting you back to the mid-1980’s. Four knobs and one switch produce more vintage sounds than you could ask for, letting you create tones that mesh the present with the past, all while putting a gigantic smile on your face.
The Bit Crusher side of the NinBitWah has one lone control – Volume. This one-knob circuit has a lot of output on tap – beware of settings over 11 o’clock or so! The Auto Wah side provides you with three controls: Attack sets the filter response, Range sets the frequency range in which the filter operates, and Sens adjusts the input signal level required to trigger the filter sweep.
The Order toggle gives you control over the order of these two circuits, either Bit > Wah or Wah > Bit. Bit > Wah gives you a lofi, growly wah sound, while Wah > Bit can provide a very cool bit crushing harmonic tone, much like the aforementioned Nintendo game sound. This mode takes a bit more dialing in, but is an experimenter’s dream, with higher notes tending to get better results.
I can still vividly remember opening that box on Christmas in the mid-80’s and realizing that my sister and I had been gifted a Nintendo Entertainment System, and the NinBitWah Bit Crusher Auto Wah took me right back to that time, combining two of my favorties things ever into one glorious noisemaking machine. If you dig old-school video games, or just creating odd, unusual noises for hours on end, then you will LOVE this pedal. Thanks to N.O.C. Pedals for sending this one my way – be sure to visit their website to grab one for yourself, and check out the rest of their lineup as well. Go see our demo, too, it’s a lot of fun, promise….cheers!!
