I’ll be honest with you all: sometimes it’s tricky to get really excited about yet another fuzz pedal. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE FUZZ, but there are a lot of three-knob, clone-ish fuzz effects out in the world, so it takes something special to really get the creative juices a’flowin’. Well, today’s pedal has reinvigorated my love for this genre – the FTelettronica Pedals Utopian Fuzz brings distinct sound and new options to the forefront, putting itself into a class unlike most fuzzy wonders that come waltzing through the door…
At the heart of the Utopian Fuzz’s tone are germanium diodes. This results in rich harmonic content and a compressed, dynamic fuzz that feels organic and raw. The circuit produces a waveform closer to a square wave, contributing to its aggressive, buzzy tone, making it ideal for heavy riffs, lead lines, or any part needing thick, saturated fuzz. And thanks to its unique diode-based circuit, the Utopian Fuzz produces a natural upper-octave overtone, especially prominent on higher notes or when playing double stops. This octave fuzz is a defining trait of the Utopian Fuzz’s sound.
–Balance: Controls the output level of the pedal
–Expander: Acts as a fuzz intensity control, letting you dial in anything from mild grit to extreme, sputtering fuzz
Two-Position Tone Switch (Mid-Boost / Mid-Scoop)
This switch provides two distinct voicings:
-Tone 1 (Mid-Boost): Punchy and present, great for cutting through a mix
-Tone 2 (Mid-Scoop): Hollow and gnarly, perfect for doom, stoner rock, or psychedelic textures
Two-Position Mode Switch
This switch allows you to choose between two modes:
Switch: The classic mode in which the tone is determined by one of the two previously mentioned positions
Knob: The ability to mix between Tone 1 and Tone 2 using the Tone knob
The ability to blend the two Tone modes is what really stands out here, making the Utopian Fuzz a truly unique entity in the fuzz world – frankly, I can’t believe this option isn’t used more in fuzz pedals…or in any other pedals, really. Regardless, it works here, giving this golden beauty a unique sonic character and experimental quality. I’m never disappointed by a creation that comes here from FTelettronica Pedals, and this piece of fuzzy goodness is no different. Be sure to check out their website – seriously, these guys have a HUGE lineup of amazing pedals, your wallet will hate you but your pedalboard won’t.
