When anyone mentions the words “green” and “overdrive” together, our minds probably all go to the same place: Tube Screamer. While the originals are beloved, there’s always room for improvement, and I’m bringing you a new version of this staple sound today. The Browne Amplification GRITADOR Screaming Overdrive brings what we love about this vintage circuit into modern times, with some twists and tweaks to make it one of the best-sounding green drives I’ve ever come across…

We won’t beat around the bush on this because we both know what classic circuit inspired this pedal. From Stevie Ray Vaughan to Trey Anastasio to John Mayer and more, the Tube Screamer has been part of more recordings than any other overdrive pedal. This version, however, is the version that Browne Amps’ resident genius-in-chief has tweaked to perfection. Why GRITADOR? Because it means “screamer” in Portuguese.

Dave from Browne Amps dialed in the midrange to be more nuanced. You still get that classic midrange bump, but without some of the inherent nasaliness that can sometimes plague this circuit. He altered the clipping to be slightly less symmetrical. He also tweaked the low end to give it more fullness while still maintaining a tight and punchy low end. Just plug it in and let go. I promise you – this thing SCREAMS.

I’ve played many, many iterations of the Tube Screamer circuit over the years, and the GRITADOR Overdrive has got to be up in the top 5. Lacking nothing but giving you everything you want in a TS-style drive, it’s a cinch to dial in an amazing sound in mere seconds, while giving you the range you might need further down the road.
