Straight-up, no-frills, to-the-point effects pedals are becoming somewhat of a rarity in today’s crazy market, so we were pretty excited about today’s featured piece of gear, a simple-to-use and extremely easy to dial in fuzz pedal from across the way in Slovenia. The MindFuzz from Surfadelic Soundwaves has a bare minimum control section, but is absolutely jam-packed with tone, power and, of course, FUZZ.
The little brother of the first incarnation of the MindFuzz, this compact version features the same internal circuitry, just packaged in an enclosure that gives you more real estate options on your pedalboard. As far as the materials used and quality of the components, everything is high-quality, with the transistors being the stars here. Using N.O.S. germanium transistors, the range of sounds available to discover is vast, delivering a cutting but full and rich guitar sound throughout.
The big knob is Fuzz, and it sets your amount of gain, from an overdriven-type sound to distortion to fuzz, and everywhere else you can think of. The Filter control adds or subtracts the bass frequencies, introducing the bass filtering when turned counterclockwise. Finally, Loudness does exactly what you’d think it would, setting your output volume to match your amp and pickup configurations.
Like we said, this pedal is pretty bare-bones as far as parameter controls go, but the circuit sounds so good, you don’t need anything else. Nice and compact, too, the MindFuzz will be a welcome and easily-fittable addition to any rig or board.
