With so many pedals saturating the market these days, especially in the Overdrive category, pedal builders are really having to come up with inventive new designs and pedal layouts to keep the public coming back for more. One company that has no shortage of innovation is J.Rockett Audio Designs, and with the Allan Holdsworth model Overdrive/Boost, they have just stepped up the game once again.

This drive consist of two sides, which can function independently: Drive and Boost. The Drive portion has controls for Gain, Volume, Bass and Treble. This is not a scorching overdrive, by any means, just an excellent tone enhancer and low-mid gain drive, so if you’re looking for a wall of distortion, keep on searching. The Boost side features a different set of controls: one main Boost knob that controls volume, and 2 toggle switches for maximum tweakability. The first is a Hi/Lo switch, with each mode emphasizing either the high end or low end. The 2nd switch lets you boost 3 different aspects of your tone: Fat, Clean and Treble, with each one providing its own signature sound into the mix.

When you click both of these sides on together, that’s where this pedal really opens up and comes alive. Granted, each side is very useable in their own right, but I loved the sound of them both working together. Suddenly, your amp is spewing out richer, more robust sounds, and you’re in the middle of your very own rock show…in your garage, or basement, or wherever you might happen to be. Very useable in many situations, the Allan Holdsworth Overdrive/Boost will be at home in a blues rock setting, just as it will be in a crazy, whacked-out jazz fusion party hosted by its namesake. Either way, you’re not going to be disappointed by this pedal, and if you are, you’re doing something wrong. J.Rockett Audio Designs not only made this great drive, but lots of other pedals, too, so make sure you go see what other rad gear they’ve got waiting for you today!
