free the tone red jasper overdriveWho has $1,500 or more for a guitar pedal? Not many of us, I’m quite sure. While the Klon is a legendary boost in it’s own right, there are a lot of pedal companies making similar pedals for way, way less money. A prime example of one of these awesome pedal makers is Free The Tone, probably most known for their ridiculous Flight Time Delay, used by none other than David Gilmour. Today’s pedal, however, is the Red Jasper, a wonderful overdrive that mimics a certain horse-graphic-inspired pedal that shall remain nameless.

Boasting only 3 control knobs (where have we seen that before?), the Red Jasper is a great plug-n-play pedal, as there aren’t really any bad settings. Level puts out the overall volume for this red beauty, and there’s enough to make it stand out, but not too much in that it will totally overtake your amplifier and guitar’s original tone. Hi-Cut is a treble boost/tone control, adding in as much high-end as you need, without piercing your eardrums or shattering the glass windows at the front of whatever club you’re playing at this Friday. Lastly, the Gain knob sounds like a warm and soothing boost when turned down, and a warm and welcoming overdrive when cranked, again being more on the subtle side, but not too chill, if you know what I mean.

Nothing super here in the Red Jasper, just a finely-made overdrive that would be welcome on any pedalboard. While it might not be the end-all, be-all of drives like the pedal we were discussing before, it is about 1/10th of the price of that silver (or gold) gem, and sounds just as incredible to most ears. If you want some really well-made, expertly-crafted pedals, be sure to check out Free The Tone’s website, and make sure you bring your credit card – you might end up buying more than one piece of gear
