T-Rex Effects Reptile Modulation Delay

Delays that have some kind of modulation incorporated with them have been my favorites for a long time, and I’m always intrigued with each new one, to see what differences and similarities they might share will others I’ve played in the past. The first version of the Reptile Delay is the one we’re gonna check out today, and although there’s a newer model, the Reptile 2, the original is still highly regarded on its own, as it should be. Not too many controls dominate this bright orange monster, but there’s enough here to really be able to have fun sitting back and listening to this underground delay gem.

An Echo knob start off the controls for the Reptile, and is your basic Blend knob, allowing you to mix more or less of the delayed effect into your guitar’s signal path, for subtle or powerful delays. Level is up next, adjusting the volume of the effect (there’s an Input Level knob on the side as well, which helps to minimize any distortion that may occur if you’re running hot pickups), followed by Repeat, which lets you set the amount of times your delay signal is repeated, from a single repeat to infinite ones. The final large control knob is Time, a must-have in any delay situation, and this one will go all the way up to one full second of delay, letting it cover the vast majority of settings that most players would need for their delay.

There’s also a second footswitch, that activates the modulation section of the Reptile, controlled by 2 small, clear knobs located in the middle of the pedal. These controls adjust both the Depth and Speed of the modulation, making it able to be just barely noticeable, or over-poweringly awesome, depending on what kind of sounds you’re seeking to create. This section emulates the classic “tape echo” pedals from past decades, and while there are many newly made version of these pedals, few bring such a faithful recreation in such a small package, perfect for any pedalboard or setup.

1000ms of delay, modulated effects and even an input level control, in a stompbox barely bigger than a standard Boss enclosure? That’s a pretty rare thing, and, thanks to T-Rex’s commitment to making outstanding gear, it sounds just incredible, too. So many options, tones and sounds to discover and utilize here, it’ll really blow your mind at first, and probably for a while after that as well. For more great T-Rex Effects gear, go check out their site, and try to find a Reptile if you can!
