Mixing it up in the effects pedal department has become almost the standard these days – adding clever options, combining effects and trying to change the overall soundscape of what we all use on our pedalboards. Today’s pedal addresses this in dramatic fashion, producing elements of fuzz, distortion, oscillation and overall weirdness with ease. The Guardian Fuzz from Hologram FX seeks to destroy everything you thought you knew about fuzz….as well as your inner ear cavity.
A fuzz created with silicon transistors through a true bypass circuit, the Guardian delivers classic fuzz tones, but with more control on tap than usual. Volume controls the output, as it should, while Tone gives you a large amplitude for the tonal modification, opening up a lot of sonic possibilities from all avenues of your EQ. Gain represents how much distortion and fuzz are present in the signal, and works together with the Gate knob, which kills any undesirable background noise after the fuzzy sustain, to drastically alter the Guardian’s saturation tones and levels.
A small toggle switch gives you two different types of fuzz styles, further aiding in your exploration of this fuzz-laden beast. A second footswitch, labeled OSC, activates the internal oscillations, which create a whole slew of new sounds to play with and attempt to tame. This mode acts differently depending on the top knobs’ settings, giving you a huge spectrum over which the noises and tones this pedal creates can glide upon.
All analog and handmade in Mexico City, the Guardian Fuzz from Hologram FX represents the surge in creativity that modern pedal builders are pouring out onto the streets for our auditory pleasure.
