Hochstrasser Electronics Transmogriphaser OTA 4-Stage Phaser

The first two pedals we took a crack at from Hochstrasser Electronics, the Disco Terrapin Envelope Filter and the Helping Friendly Box Overdrive Compressor, were absolute gems, two pedals we instantly fell in love with and have been experimenting with ever since. Today, we get to investigate a third pedal of theirs, the Transmogriphaser, a dual channel, OTA (Operational Transconductance Amplifier), 4-stage phaser that conjures up Pink Floyd, Chili Peppers, Van Halen, Queen and more of those classic sounds you love and seek to emulate with ease.

The Transmogriphaser features two channels, each containing the same control setup, that you can switch between. Depth sets the amount of phase shifting that occurs, from a mild wobble to a deep, rich, swirling phase. Rate adjusts the frequency of the LFO that sweeps the phase shifting, and Feedback controls the resonance in the circuit. The Depth and Feedback controls interact with each other, making them fun to explore and experiment with to discover a whole new set of sounds.

Each mode has its own toggle switch as well, Range, which changes the minimum and maximum settings of the Rate controls. Slower phasing takes place when the toggle is in the Down position, while Up increases the speed and can get into crazy ring modulation territory when maxed out, for even more phaser choices to mold and shape as you see fit. The FX footswitch turns the effect on and off, and the Mode footswitch flip flops between the two sides, for effortless settings switching.

The Transmogriphaser also uses and internal charge pump, which boosts the 9V power supply required up to about 16V, for more headroom and a clean sound. There’s even a Phat version you can order, which will give you slightly bigger control knobs, depending on what you need. As for the sound, just take a listen below – this thing is gooey, phasing in and out with ease and adding a warm blanket of tone to your rig. Slow it down to add just a hint of vibe, speed it up a little for some pulsing chords and lead runs or crank it up for some out-of-this-world exploration. Another job more than well done by Erich and the Hochstrasser Electronics crew – check out their other pedals HERE, on their website and in the near future at Pedal of the Day for more reviews and demos. Happy Saturday!
