Creepy Fingers Effects Fuzz Nugget

Anyone who knows the band Fu Manchu knows they have a pretty signature sound, and the bass is a big part of it. What you might not know is that the bass player, Brad Davis, is also the mastermind behind Creepy Fingers Effects, and he was kind enough to send us a pedal to check out today. The Fuzz Nugget is just that: a tasty little morsel of fuzz wrapped in a big old gold box, Eatin’ Dust and just waiting to be unleashed on the world. Well, let the unleashing begin…

The Fuzz Nugget began its life as a straight up one-to-one Clone (of the Universe) of the Maestro Fz-1a, using all germanium transistors and running on an actual AA battery. While the sound was great, it was plagued by the same issues as the original. This new (ish) version remedies those issues and aims to create a better catch-all 60’s fuzz. The circuit now accepts 9v and has an LED indicator, as well as a battery eliminator jack. The fuzz itself still runs on the 1.5V supply like the original, so you still get that squishy, saggy feel. The transistors have been changed to NOS Silicon (providing temperature stability) and re-biased, for a more sustain and some gentle gating, which helps produce that old school fuzz texture. The Attack/Fuzz control was changed to provide a better range as well, going from a low gain sound to full on fuzz. A tone control (Bottom) has been added, too, giving you either the thin buzz of the original, or lots of lows for a totally new sound.

We love the ranges available on the Fuzz Nugget, both with the actual fuzz and the overall tonal qualities you can coax out. That classic 60’s sound comes shining through around every sonic corner, and there’s not a bad setting to be found throughout. Heavy but clear, bold but not overpowering, loud but not deafening – the Fuzz Nugget brings a lot to the sonic table, and will be a welcome asset to any guitar OR bass rig, believe it. Plug this puppy in and you’ll be King of the Road in no time flat. Thanks to Brad for the opportunity to check this one out, we can’t wait to get more Creepy Fingers effects into our rotation – while you wait, be sure to check out our demo video below, and listen to this beauty in action. If you’ve been In Search Of…the right fuzz, you may have just found your golden treasure.
