Octave pedals seem to be fairly hit or miss, as far as tight low end, good tracking and non-muddiness in your tone are concerned. There are inexpensive octave pedals and there are super expensive ones, and each one seems to be a personal preference to everyone who plays them. Well, we’re gonna lay another one on you today, and let you decide if it’s worthy or not. The SOC-10 Octopus Octave from CNZ Audio doesn’t cost a lot, but features some pretty nice options and tones to go along with its small price tag. Let’s see what it’s all about, k?
Like most of the lineup of effects from CNZ Audio, the size of the Octopus is the first thing you notice. Small and extremely pedalboard-friendly, it won’t take up much room in your rig, and is even more perfect if you want it to live underneath your board and run it through a switcher of some type. Find a great sound and leave it, that’s one of the advantages of the SOC-10. Featuring Upper and Lower octave modes, each with their own volume control, you get the best of both octave worlds in one tiny package. There’s even a BOTH mode, which blends the High and Low octave circuits together, allowing you to extremely fine tune your sound.
There’s one more big knob (well, big on this pedal) that acts as a blend between your Wet and Dry signals. Not super useful here, a little tweaking of this portion of the pedal would result in a major improvement overall, but it not the end of the world for a $60 pedal. A nice addition is the hidden Preset feature, which lets you call up your favorite setting just by tapping the Bypass switch twice. You usually don’t see caveats like that in pedals near this price point, and was therefore very welcome indeed.
Small? Check. Good tones? Check. Inexpensive? Check. Hey, if you’re looking for a particular sound but don’t have a giant budget, the SOC-10 Octopus is the octave pedal for you. And even if it’s not, you won’t break the bank giving it a try, and you just might be surprised with what it can do.
