We’ve been checking out effects pedals from our friend Pat Garland down in Houston, Texas since 2014 (HTX Active Drive, Pink Drive, Dos Armas Combo, etc), and we’re excited to bring you another one of his concoctions today. The Garland FX Zero Distortion combines all your favorite dirt sounds in one aesthetically-pleasing, bright enclosure. With hints of Tone Bender, Big Muff and wild, fuzzy abandon, there’s a lot to coax out of this seemingly simple box.
Volume, Gain and Tone make up the core of the Zero Distortion’s controls, but there are a couple of additions that make this not your ordinary dirt pedal. First, a Bias knob controls the flavor of the distortion by adjusting the bias of the transistors within the circuit. Basically, you can go from stabby splat to broken-up amplifier to tight and high gain in a matter of seconds. It’s fun to play around with this and the Gain parameter in tandem, for a slew of innovative musical ideas and sounds. There’s also a toggle switch here, which has Bright/Normal capabilities. It changes the overall styling from fatter fuzz to a more cutting distortion, and is perfect for adjusting between different types of pickups, depending on your guitar’s setup.
If you’re looking to get into Smashing Pumpkins / Mudhoney / etc. types of sonic territory, the Garland FX Zero Distortion could be a one-stop-shop for you. Mixing in so many varying sounds and types of distorted noise, there’s a ton to explore and dig into here, complete with all the amp-shaking rock you can handle. Overdrive? Fuzz? Distortion? This one does it all.
