Outer Space Sounds MOSTRO FM Synthesizer

Today, we’re venturing into new-ish territory here at Pedal of the Day. While most of our reviews and demo have to do with pedals, today’s featured piece of gear, the Outer Space Sounds MOSTRO FM Synthesizer, adds some different elements into the mix. A powerful, polyphonic and effective FM synth, this gorgeous unit has been designed to deliver deep, continuous and intuitive control to the user…let’s see what’s in store for us today!

MOSTRO boasts a wide but not too complex set of controls, allowing even synth novices like us to get it up and running in no time. The sound engine features four voice polyphony, with an LFO and an Envelope per voice, along with Modulation Index, Ratio and Feedback parameter controls. For the LFO, you can choose Sync of Freewheel modes of operation as well. The Envelopes and the LFO can be routed to the parameters, with the LFO also being able to be routed to the carrier, for vibrato-like effects. The LFO routes can be independently set for each parameter or in all possible combinations.

There’s a Delay unit integrated into the circuit as well, giving you Time, Feedback and Effects Send parameters to work with. A Glissando control lets you control both the polyphony (poly or mono) and the time of the note slide as well, opening up the production of new mixes and inventive tones galore. The keyboard itself can be configured to play either notes or chords, and the Octave buttons allow you to change the notes of the keyboard from chromatic to other scales. There’s even a built-in Looper, which you can use to record sequences from either the internal keyboard or external MIDI. Plus, you can store up to 100 Presets and copy them to or from a computer via USB, keeping all of your unique creations in tact for years to come.

With the presets available, CV, MIDI and USB A/B connectivity and the array of controls here, there’s nothing not to love about the Outer Space Sounds MOSTRO FM Synthesizer. This magnificent little box really got our creative juices a-flowin’, and once we hooked it up with some of our favorite effects, we were off to the sonic races. Adding phaser, flanger, reverb and delay to the signal chain, we were able to really see what could be achieved pairing this beautiful synth with a couple of pedals. The sky’s the limit, they say – well, MOSTRO just blew that limit out of the water, and we are currently headed to the far reaches of space with no return time frame in sight. Be sure to check out our demo below to see what we came up with, and visit the Outer Space Sounds website for all the details and to order one for yourself. Cheers!
