Matthews Effects Astronomer V2 Celestial Reverb

Our first foray into the world of Matthews Effects is a good one – today, we’re checking out the Astronomer V2 Celestial Reverb. If the name itself doesn’t intrigue you, maybe you just don’t like reverb. If it does, you’re in for a real treat, as this thing launches you into outer space and back again in seconds flat. Made up of two channels, each assignable with one of three different algorithms, there’s a lot to explore in this ambient beauty….

As you can see, the Astronomer V2 Celestial Reverb’s controls are the same, no matter which set of knobs you’re using. Mass sets the Wet/Dry signal blend, going to 100% Wet when maxed out. Glow adjusts the mix of the Shimmer for the Orion and Canis Major algorithms, and sets the Octave mix for Ursa Major. Travel adjusts the Decay Time for all three algorithms.

Speaking of algorithms, they are as follows:

Canis Major – echoverb effect designed with droning and swells in mind
Orion – quintessential hall reverb with shimmer
Ursa Major – chamber reverb with pre-octave tones and haunting, dark particles

The two channel approach here lets you choose different control knob settings for each set, then instantly toggle between the two as needed. You can also assign different algorithms to each set via switches on the pedals’ side:

As far as other features are concerned, there’s some great stuff here as well. An Alternate Jack out lets you control the Alt and Bypass switches remotely, while an Expression Jack allows for dynamic control of the Travel knob on the 2nd row of controls, via TRS cable. The dry signal path is 100% analog to stay in tact, while the digital wet signal creates a unique and unparalleled sound. You can also set this pedal to Trails or Bypass mode, depending on how you’ve got the rest of your rig set up, or what you need during a recording session.

As for the sounds that pour out, well, just go on ahead and have a look-see at our demo video below. Spacious, engulfing, spectrum-sweeping and inspiring are some words that come to mind when describing this reverb, but you’ll have to see and hear for yourself. If you’re in need of two set reverb tones that can be swapped in and out at a moment’s notice, the Matthews Effects Astronomer V2 Celestial Reverb is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
