Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box Octave Fuzz

Our first foray into the world of products from Warm Audio was just about a month or so ago, in the form of the Jet Phaser. A powerful recreation of a vintage classic, we were blown away by how great it looked and sounded. Well, we’re back at it again today, with the second device in the current WA lineup. The Foxy Tone Box Octave Fuzz reinvigorates another classic effects pedal, the Foxx Tone Machine, complete with velvet covering and bone-crushing tone.

Used in the early 70’s by the likes of Billy Gibbons and Peter Frampton, the Foxx Tone Machine had a unique design, as well as a unique sound. The Foxy Tone Box features the same footswitch on top, knobs on the side design as the original, which really looks like no other pedal. A big pedal, for sure, this isn’t one to cram onto a board full of mini effects. But if you have the real estate, this orange gem is a real keeper.

The controls remain true to the original as well: Volume, Sustain and Fuzz, which has a range going from “Mellow” to “Brite”. There’s also a switch to engage the Octave Up effect, which really opens things up and makes this pedal stand out. From mellow and subdued crunch to all-out searing fuzz and everything in between, this pedal is a virtual library of dirt encased in orange velvet! Square wave distortion to all-out searing fuzz and everything in between, the Foxy Tone Box has all your fuzz needs covered.

It sounds excellent on guitar, as expected, but it also works wonders with bass, synths, drum machines and more. Using a stash of the correct NOS (“New Old Stock”) Fairchild transistors used in the original, then pairing them with germanium diodes, high-watt carbon resistors, and film capacitors, this one brings the fury of the vintage pedal to the present day. Congrats once more to the crew at Warm Audio, as these two pedals of theirs we’ve had the pleasure to review have been nothing short of spectacular. If you want all these vintage sounds, but don’t want to pay upwards of $600 for them, the Foxy Tone Box Octave Fuzz is right up your alley. Cheers!
