The first two pedals we saw from Radio Mule, the Red Petal Fuzz and the Electric Beard Fuzz were, well, awesome, to say the least. Eagerly anticipating their next release, we were recently rewarded with today’s pedal, the HIGH Overdrive Preamp. A low-to-mid gain dirt pedal, this one has some excellent add-ons for really digging in and sculpting your sound – let’s dig in, too!
The HIGH Overdrive Preamp is inspired by hi-fi and studio preamp designs, along with some of the most popular overdrive circuits in history. Combining internal voltage doubling, asymmetric diode clipping, a 2-band active EQ, and an active volume control that supplies up to 15db of clean gain, HIGH brings new levels of clarity and tone shaping to your pedal board. Volume is an active volume control, ranging from full attenuation to +15db of boost, while Drive increases gain to the clipping circuit, adding grit and compression.
The EQ section consists of Treble and Bass controls, each boost or attenuate high or low frequencies, respectively, by up to 12db. The Bass EQ shape switch toggles the Bass control EQ curve between a low-shelf filter (boost or cut everything below the cutoff frequency) and peaking or bell shaped filter. The Treble and Bass knobs each have a switch that controls their cutoff frequency as well – between 600Hz and 1.2kHz for the Treble (which is hardwired as a hi-shelf filter), 150Hz and 300Hz for the Bass control.
The HIGH Overdrive Preamp sounds incredible on its own, and plays well with others, too, for all day long stacking and experimenting with the rest of your dirt section.
